  A. Department of Electrical Engineering

Graduate Program(Master and PHD Program)

 The Department offers a graduate program leading to the degree Ph.D. and the degree Master of Science in Electrical Engineering. The curriculum is structured to give the graduate students a balanced technical background in core areas of modern engineering and a significant experience in advanced design via a thesis.

 Students work closely with a faculty advisor in tailoring an overall program best suited to their background and interests. Course sequences, design projects, and research are available in power engineering, power electronics, energy, control theory and application, digital systems and computers, microprocessor applications, circuit and system, image and signal processing, optical and electrical engineering, communication, information engineering, and RF IC design. The Department has excellent computer and/or laboratory facilities to support advanced studies in these areas.

Undergraduate Program

 The Department offers a four-year and a two-year electrical engineering degree program which provides a balance of engineering science and design. The curriculum is challenging, yet flexible enough to meet special interests and needs. Undergraduates have opportunities to assist faculty with research and published papers in academic journals.

  B. Department of Electronic Engineering(Jiangong)

Graduate Program(Master and PHD Program)

 The Department offers a graduate program leading to the degree Ph.D. and the degree Master of Science in Electrical Engineering. The curriculum is structured to give the graduate students a balanced technical background in core areas of modern engineering and a significant experience in advanced design via a thesis.

 Students work closely with a faculty advisor in tailoring an overall program best suited to their background and interests. Course sequences, design projects, and research are available in power engineering, power electronics, energy, control theory and application, digital systems and computers, microprocessor applications, circuit and system, image and signal processing, optical and electrical engineering, communication, information engineering, and RF IC design. The Department has excellent computer and/or laboratory facilities to support advanced studies in these areas.

 The program trains students to become excellent R & D personnel with courses emphasizing integration and application of technology on semiconductor, information, and telecommunication engineering. Professional research facilities are available to upgrade students' ability in system operation and independent research.

Research Trend

  • Electronic division: electronic property of quantum devices, electric property and manufacturing of high-speed heterojunction-bipolar transistor (HBT), high electron mobility transistor (HEMT), surface acoustic-wave (SAW) filter, field-emission devices (FED), etc.
  • Telecommunication division: compression and rebuilding techniques of image signals, Microstripantena, wireless communication, signal processing, optic communication, satellite communication.
  • Information division: software engineering; VLSI circuit design; VLSI computer-aided-design, natural language procession, electronic commercial system, etc.

Undergraduate Program

 The Department produces skillful technicians capable of assisting the design, production, operating and service of electronic system and equipment with an emphasis on the practical areas of communications and information. Students are encouraged to participate in contests and accreditation tests to become certified technicians.

Emphasis Areas & Specialization

  • Electronics engineering: microelectronics, basic circuit theory, electromagnetism, solid-state Physics, semiconductor physics, device physics, electro-optical devices, and VLSI technology, etc.
  • Telecommunication engineering: compression and rebuilding techniques of image signals, microstrip antenna, wireless communication, etc.
  • Information engineering: to develop Fast Prototyping Lab, Advanced Image and Signal Processing Lab, and Embedded Microprocessor and Embedded ICE Generator System (IC Design Center).

  C. Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering

The department of Computer Science and Information Engineering is founded in 2005 at National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences.

In view of the development of information industry, the Dean of College of Engineering, Chun-Hsiung Fang, led Cheng-Hong Yang and Thou-Ho Chen (affiliated with the Department of Electronic Engineering), and Wen-Shyang Hwang and Tyng-Yeu Liang (affiliated with the Department of Electrical Engineering) to establish this department.

By combining the professors that have the IT ability, we can nurture IT talents for the information industry.In our department, we have engaged nine professors that have the doctoral degree in the information engineering related fields. And have diversified courses to meet the necessary for the student.

We aim to nurture IT talents with internationalization and specialization to supply the necessary for the information industry in Taiwan.

In our department, the undergraduate students have basic IT capabilities and logical thinking, and the graduate students have the innovation in the research and the application. Simultaneously, all students must have the ability of independent thinking and execution, and have the spirit of professional dedication, professional ethics and team work.

  D. Institute of Photonics and Communication

About IPC

Welcome to the Institute of Photonics and Communications (IPC) at the National Kaohsiung University of  Science and Technology, Taiwan. Our Institute is your portal to the outstanding offerings of our faculty, students, and staff.

The goal of the Institute is to promote research and education in the fields of photonics and communications. In the current stage, the Institute is designed to offer a professional Master's program in photonics and communication engineering.

The mission of the Institute consists of three interrelated elements: providing the highest quality instruction for our graduate students, conducting cutting-edge research in photonics and communication engineering, and providing leadership and service to our professional communities. We are committed to excelling in all these areas.

Since 2000, worldwide progress in the fields of optoelectronic and communication engineering has stimulated a strong demand for engineers with both software and hardware backgrounds. To meet this demand, the Institute of Photonics and Communications was established under the College of Engineering in 2004. The Institute was then shifted to the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 2006. The faculty members of the Institute include two assistant professors, two associate professors, and four full professors who have good reputation in their respective fields of research.

The major technologies in our research programs include microwave and antenna, pattern recognition, digital image processing, optical system design, solar cell, spin-splitting calculation for semiconductor, Micro-Electro-Mechanical System, and laser technology. The institute is home to seven research laboratories and one educational laboratory, with annual research funds exceeding NT$8.0M. About 50% to 70% of the funding comes from the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of the Education; the rest comes from the other government research institutes and local industries.

The Institute provides education in the levels of M.S. and Ph.D. Approximately 44 students are enrolled in M.S. courses, and there are in total 6 students on Ph.D. level. The size of the faculty and student body in the institute will continue to grow, enabling us to strengthen the existing research areas and expand into new ones.

  H. Department of Microelectronics Engineering

Microelectronics is fundamentally a multi-disciplinary field of research, exploring the physics, materials and chemistry required to make devices work. It is also multidisciplinary with regard to its wide variety of applications, as it plays a crucial role in all fields of innovation, ranging from advanced health care to telecommunications and smart grids. The ever-increasing demand for processing power, sensing capabilities and miniaturisation makes microelectronics a highly innovative research field.
